The Leaven That a Woman Mixed into Three Measures of Flour
Jesus often revealed the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven through parables. The Parable of the Sower, the Mustard Seed, the Net, and today’s subject—the Parable of the Leaven—are all among these teachings.

From this perspective, the three measures of flour represent the hearts and minds of people who are able to receive God’s Word.
When God’s Word is planted within a person, that individual no longer remains the same but is gradually changed into a new life.
3. The Leaven
Many people assume that leaven always represents something good.
However, Jesus explained that leaven symbolizes teaching.
He warned His disciples:
“Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
At first, the disciples thought He was referring to ordinary bread because they had forgotten to bring some after the feeding of the five thousand.
Jesus then explained that He was speaking about the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Thus, in Scripture, leaven symbolizes teaching or doctrine.
There are teachings that lead people toward God, and there are false teachings that lead people away from Him.
Ultimately, the kind of teaching a person receives determines the direction of his or her faith.
People Transformed by Jesus’ Teaching
Jesus had faithful disciples such as Peter, James, and John.
As they learned from Him, their lives were completely transformed.
On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus revealed His glorious appearance, giving them a glimpse of the glory that was to come.
His teaching was not merely the communication of knowledge.
It was the Word of Life, which transformed people’s hearts and spirits.
From this perspective, the kingdom of heaven that Jesus described is a parable showing how people are transformed by the life-giving teaching of the true shepherd and are led toward resurrection.
The Teaching of the True Shepherd at the Second Coming
The Bible also prophesies that, in the last days, God will raise up a shepherd who proclaims His will (Revelation 22:8, 16).
It further teaches that those whose hearts are transformed by that teaching will participate in the first resurrection.
Just as people were transformed through Jesus’ teaching at His first coming, so also at His second coming people will be transformed through the teaching of the true shepherd sent by God and will take part in the first resurrection.
The important point is not human tradition or personal opinion, but being transformed through the Word of God testified to in the Scriptures.
The Meaning of the Parable of the Leaven
According to this understanding, the symbols in Jesus’ parable may be summarized as follows:
- The Woman → The true shepherd who nurtures God’s people.
- Three Measures of Flour → The hearts of people who are able to receive God’s Word.
- The Leaven → The life-giving teaching proclaimed by the true shepherd.
When the life-giving teaching of the true shepherd enters a person’s heart, that person’s spirit is transformed, and the transformed believer begins to live according to God’s will.
