The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like a Net Cast into the Sea
When Jesus was on earth at His first coming, He often explained the kingdom of heaven through parables.
“Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish.”
(Matthew 13:47)
Many people understand this passage simply to mean that many people will gather into heaven. However, the expressions the sea, the fish, and the net carry much deeper meanings that are revealed throughout the Bible.
Let us examine the meaning of this parable through Scripture.
1. What Does the Sea Represent?
The Bible symbolically compares people to fish.
The prophet Habakkuk prayed to God:
“You have made people like the fish in the sea.”
(Habakkuk 1:14)
Likewise, in Daniel’s vision, beasts came up out of the sea, and the sea represents the world of mankind (Daniel 7:3, 17).
From these passages, we can understand the biblical symbolism:
- Sea = The world
- Fish = People
2. What Does the Net Represent?
The Bible also uses the image of a net to symbolize a person’s words.
Solomon wrote:
“The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives.”
(Proverbs 18:7)
What comes from the mouth is speech or words.
Therefore, the net can be understood as a figurative expression for the Word.
The net that Jesus spoke of was not merely a fishing net. It symbolizes God’s Word, which gathers people.
3. Jesus’ Net at His First Coming
Jesus called Peter and Andrew and said:
“Come, follow Me, and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Peter and Andrew had been fishermen who caught literal fish.
Jesus, however, called them to become fishers of people.
How were people gathered?
Not by swords.
Not by force.
Not by wealth.
They were gathered through the gospel of the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus and His disciples proclaimed God’s Word throughout the religious world of Judaism. Those who believed His message became God’s people, just as fish are gathered into a net.
Among the Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, Zealots, and many others, there were those who accepted Jesus’ message.
The gospel of the kingdom proclaimed by Jesus was the net that gathered people.
4. Why Is the Net Compared to the Kingdom of Heaven?
Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is like a net because the gospel gathers people into God’s kingdom.
Those who hear God’s Word and believe it are gathered into the net and are ultimately led into the kingdom God has prepared.
In this figurative language:
- The Word that gathers people = The Net
- The Net = The Kingdom of Heaven
This is the meaning of Jesus’ parable.
5. Is There Also a Net at the Second Coming?
Just as God gathered people at Jesus’ first coming, the Bible testifies that He will again gather people at Christ’s second coming.
The New Testament records the events that are to take place in the future, and the Book of Revelation contains prophecies concerning the last days.
At the Second Coming, the fulfilled message of New Testament prophecy will be proclaimed, and those who hear and understand it will be gathered together.
From this perspective, the net at the Second Coming is also the gospel that proclaims the fulfillment of New Testament prophecy.
Through this message, God gathers people from the Christian world into His kingdom.
Conclusion
Jesus was not simply telling a story about fish.
He was revealing, through parables, God’s plan of salvation and the kingdom of heaven.
At His first coming, people heard the gospel of the kingdom and came out to follow Him.
Likewise, at His second coming, there will be people who hear and understand the fulfilled Word of God’s promises.
The Bible continually reveals God’s will to those who sincerely seek Him.
Therefore, it is important for us to study the Scriptures and understand what Jesus’ parables truly mean.
His parables are not merely stories.
They are precious teachings that reveal the kingdom of God.
Within the symbols of the sea, the fish, and the net is God’s plan to gather people and lead them into His kingdom.
