In Ezekiel 37 of the Old Testament, God showed the prophet Ezekiel a remarkable vision.
Before him lay a vast valley filled with countless dry bones scattered across the ground. Then God asked Ezekiel,
“Son of man, can these bones live?”
From a human perspective, such a thing was impossible, so Ezekiel replied,
“Sovereign Lord, You alone know.”
Then God commanded Ezekiel to prophesy to the dry bones and proclaim His word over them.
As the word of God was proclaimed, something extraordinary happened.
The scattered bones came together, tendons and flesh formed upon them, and finally breath entered them. They came to life and stood as a vast army.
But was this vision simply meant to demonstrate the miracle of dead bodies coming back to life?
According to the Bible, the answer is no.
Why Did God Show This Vision to Ezekiel?
Throughout Scripture, God often reveals visions and prophecies first, then fulfills them later in history.
The vision of the dry bones in Ezekiel’s valley was also a prophecy, foreshadowing God’s future work of salvation.
Its fulfillment would appear about 600 years later, when Jesus came into the world.
Why Was Judaism in Jesus’ Day Compared to “Dry Bones”?
By the time Jesus came, the faith practiced in Israel was no longer centered on the worship God had established. Instead, it had become dominated by the traditions and teachings of the scribes and Pharisees.
Outwardly, they appeared to believe in God.
Yet Jesus strongly rebuked their spiritual condition, saying,
“You are like whitewashed tombs.”
There is no life inside a tomb.
Although it may appear beautiful on the outside, it contains only death within.
In other words, because people had departed from God’s word and followed false teachings, their souls had lost spiritual life.
This was the same spiritual condition symbolized by the dry bones Ezekiel saw in the valley.
Jesus Proclaimed God’s Life-Giving Word
Just as God commanded Ezekiel,
“Prophesy to the breath,”
Jesus also proclaimed God’s word to the people.
Jesus declared,
“A time is coming when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”
This statement points not only to physical resurrection but also to the spiritual restoration of those who hear God’s word and receive new life.
Those who accepted the gospel of Jesus turned away from false teachings and received the life-giving word of God.
Dead Souls Became a Great Army
Jesus’ disciples and many others who heard His message received new spiritual life.
They were no longer bound solely by the traditions of Judaism.
Instead, they became people who proclaimed the gospel of the Kingdom of God that Jesus had preached.
Just as the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision came to life and became a great army, those who received Jesus’ gospel also became a spiritual army, equipped with the truth and sent to proclaim the good news.
From this perspective, the vision of Ezekiel can be understood not merely as a story about a miraculous event, but as a prophecy foreshadowing God’s work of salvation fulfilled at Jesus’ first coming.
The Lesson of Ezekiel’s Vision for Believers Today
The vision of the dry bones is not merely a story from the distant past.
The Bible teaches that where God’s word is absent, there is no life, and that souls are brought to life through hearing His true word.
Therefore, each of us should ask:
Am I living within God’s life-giving word, or am I remaining in human traditions and ideas?
Understanding God’s work of salvation as revealed throughout Scripture is of great importance for every believer.
The vision of the dry bones was not simply a miracle in which lifeless bones came back to life. Rather, it foretold how those who were spiritually dead because of false teachings would hear God’s word at Jesus’ first coming, receive new life, and become a great army proclaiming the gospel.
God’s word is the word of life that gives life even to the spiritually dead.
As we learn throughout the Bible how God makes His promises and faithfully fulfills them, we are able to gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures.
