The Mark of the Beast—666
“He caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. Here is wisdom. Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.” — Revelation 13:16–18
Today, we will examine the meaning of 666, a subject that has long intrigued many believers.
Many people commonly associate 666 with ideas such as the number supposedly written on the pope’s crown, microchips, or other modern theories. According to this interpretation, however, such explanations are human speculation rather than the biblical answer.
Let us therefore examine, through the Scriptures, what the Bible teaches concerning the mark of 666.
Why Must We Understand the Mark of 666?
“Then another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath… He will be tormented with fire and sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb… They have no rest day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.'” — Revelation 14:9–11
The “mark of its name” mentioned here is the same mark referred to in Revelation 13 as 666.
According to this passage, those who receive this mark will suffer eternal punishment with fire and sulfur.
During His First Coming, Jesus spoke of hell, saying that everyone there would be “salted with fire” (Mark 9:49). According to this interpretation, this expression carries the same meaning as being tormented with fire and sulfur.
Therefore, receiving the mark of 666 results in judgment. For this reason, every believer should know whether he has received this mark or not. To determine that, one must first understand what the mark actually represents.
The Old Testament Pattern Behind the Prophecy
The Book of Revelation contains many prophecies written by drawing upon events from both the Old and New Testament periods as symbolic patterns.
The prophecy concerning the mark of 666 is understood as one of these symbolic prophecies.
After leaving Egypt under Moses, the Israelites promised God that they would worship no other gods besides Him before entering the Promised Land.
However, Solomon, Israel’s third king, loved many foreign women. He built high places where they could worship their foreign gods and eventually worshiped those gods himself.
Because Israel’s king worshiped foreign gods, the people followed his example.
God described this as breaking His covenant, just as Adam had done (Hosea 6:7). According to this interpretation, Adam and Eve’s sin likewise involved turning to another god.
Although Solomon is widely remembered as the king of wisdom, this interpretation emphasizes that he ultimately betrayed God by worshiping foreign gods.
This background is considered important because the beast who appears in Revelation is understood to play a role similar to Solomon’s.
The Meaning of the Number 666
“The weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold.” — 2 Chronicles 9:13
During Solomon’s reign, Israel became prosperous because of his wisdom. Many foreign nations brought tribute to him.
The annual tribute amounted to 666 talents of gold.
According to this interpretation, the important point is that this gold came from the Gentile nations, not from God’s covenant people.
Likewise, Revelation describes the beast giving the mark of 666.
Therefore, this interpretation concludes that 666 symbolizes something introduced from outside God’s covenant people.
Under the Old Covenant, this was literal gold.
However, according to Hebrews 9:10, the former ordinances were reformed under the New Covenant.
The deeper meaning of gold, according to this interpretation, represents the word of God, specifically doctrine or teaching.
“The words of the Lord are pure words…” — Psalm 12:6
Accordingly, this interpretation concludes that the gold brought by foreign nations during Solomon’s reign points spiritually to foreign doctrine entering God’s people under the New Testament.
Thus, the mark of the beast (666) is understood as doctrine originating from spiritual outsiders, and receiving the mark means accepting and acknowledging those teachings.
Who Is the Beast?
To avoid receiving the mark, one must first understand the identity of the beast.
“Surely I am more stupid than any man, and I have not the understanding of a man. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.” — Proverbs 30:2–3
According to this interpretation, Scripture describes a person who lacks the knowledge of God as a beast.
In other words, the beast represents a person, not a literal animal.
More specifically, this interpretation identifies the beast as a shepherd (religious leader) coming from outside God’s covenant people.
When Jesus described the signs of the last days in Matthew 24, His first warning was:
“See that no one leads you astray.”
According to this interpretation, this warning refers to the beast who deceives people through the mark of 666.
A Repeated Biblical Pattern
In Genesis, Adam and Eve—God’s chosen people—were deceived by the serpent and ate the forbidden fruit, which this interpretation understands as accepting false doctrine and turning to another god.
During Solomon’s reign, Solomon was likewise led astray through foreign influences and worshiped foreign gods.
The Book of Revelation similarly prophesies that God’s people will again be deceived by receiving the doctrine of the beast and will turn away from God.
The common element in all three events is that God’s people were deceived by influences coming from outside His covenant community.
In the Old Testament, Israel was God’s chosen nation, while Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, and other nations were Gentiles.
According to this interpretation, after Jesus’ First Coming, those who understand God’s Word become God’s people, while those who do not understand it are regarded as spiritual Gentiles (Mark 4:10–12).
Thus, simply attending church or professing Christianity does not, according to this interpretation, make one part of God’s covenant people apart from understanding God’s Word.
Jesus also warned that many false shepherds would arise in the last days, claiming authority while deceiving many people.
Accordingly, the deception described in Revelation is understood to occur within Christianity itself, with Christians deceiving other Christians.
Conclusion
According to this interpretation:
- The beast who administers the mark is a person—specifically, a false shepherd from outside God’s covenant people.
- The mark of 666 represents the doctrine or teaching proclaimed by that false shepherd.
- Receiving the mark means accepting and believing that doctrine.
This interpretation concludes that these meanings are derived not from human speculation but from the symbolic teachings of Scripture as understood within this interpretive framework.
